James, you're a martial artist. What is your martial arts background?
James Lee: 30 + years martial arts, 3 championship titles, Black belts in 5 styles of martial arts Kung Fu, Ju Jitsu, Karate, Tae
Kwon Do, and Kobujutsu weaponry. World renowned in the field of weaponry and close quarter combat. Trained with
Masters Wei Kong Koo, Sang Kee Paik, and Kim Kahana Sr.
You're a student of the American Academy of Music. Can you tell about your music passion?
James Lee: I am trained classically in piano and the violin. I love making "epic sound track" like music. Currently working with
2nd Unit Stunt Movie Director Kim Kahana Sr. on action music for his projects.
How did you get started in the movie business?
James Lee: I was discovered by producers Doug Scwharz and Michael Berke of Baywatch along with Wrestling star Hulk
Hogan. They saw me performing martial art weaponry and asked me to be a villain in one of their movies. My first job was
stunt double for Asian Actor Cary Tagawa in Thunder in Paradise.
Stunt work is extremaly dangerous. Have you been in a serious accident on the set?
James Lee: Stunt work can be extremely dangerous. I have never been in an accident on the set. I was well trained in stunts
by legendary stunt man Kim Kahana Sr.( kahanastunts.com ) who always taught us safety first. The funny thing about this is
that although I had never been hurt in stunts or in fighting I was brushing my hair one day after praying to God to change my
life and my arm blew out of socket.
Tell about your work in films "Blade" and "Lethal Weapon 4".
James Lee: Both Blade and Lethal Weapon 4 were incredible movies to work on! I was extremely honored to be in both and I
got to work with some of the greatest martial artist of our time. I am usually brought in to the movie making process as a
weapons expert, villain, or stunt and fight choreographer. In Lethal Weapon 4 we had lots of martial arts especially with the
amazing Jet Li but we had a lot of gun play too as it was a cop movie. Blade being more futuristic/fantasy we got to have
have more liberty with the martial arts fight scenes adding to the comic book style of media.
You acted in film "Shootfighter 2'' with Bolo Yeung. Tell us some of the experiences you've had on the set.
James Lee: Shootfighter was great! I am a big fan of Bolo and am honored to have been in a movie with him. I have always
been amazed at his pure strength and size combined with his ability to move so quickly and effortlessly. He is a humble and
honorable man. It was also fun to work with Billy Zabka and the martial art choreography in many areas was super!
What movie genre are you most like and why?
James Lee: I would say I am most like the action genre. I love physical sports, stunts, and excitement! I love to fight,
choreograph martial arts, and shoot guns. Yeah, I would say ACTION!
Are you a bodyguard too?
James Lee: I have worked in executive protection for many years. I have run over 1500 special events and have protected
numerous celebrities.
What are your plans for the future?
James Lee: Currently working on a movie project with Kim Kahana Sr. and I just opened my new martial art school Fortress Hill
in Orlando, Florida. I am also preparing to coach martial arts abroad in Cairo, Egypt this Summer and looking forward to
vacationing shortly with my wonderful family.
Thank you so much for the interview.
